Sudden Hearing Loss

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) is a sudden and rapid loss of hearing in one or both ears. ISSHL is unexpected, unexplainable, and frequently only affects one ear

How does HBOT help Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (ISSHL)?

  • Maximizes the oxygen partial pressure supplied to the inner ear
  • Minimizes ischemic damage (cellular death) after ISSHL
  • Aids vascular recovery (promotes blood vessel growth & repair)
  • Can provide antibacterial effects through oxygen radicals and promote angiogenesis with tissue regeneration

HBOT when started within 14 days of losing hearing combined with steroids (both oral and injected) can partially or even completely restore hearing.

When doesn’t HBOT help Sudden Hearing Loss(SHL)?

  • If you don’t get into the chamber within 14 days of hearing loss.
  • If you don’t start on steroids right away, or at all.
  • Timing is everything: A patient who came in on the 14th day regained 100% of his hearing. A patient who came in on the 16th day regained only 10%; this is due to cellular death.

Necessary Factors to Regain Hearing

  • See your primary care doctor or ENT immediately.
  • Start on oral and transtympanic corticosteroids right away. Transtympanic corticosteroids are injected into the eardrum to stimulate the nerves.
